Vientiane doesn’t get the hype Luang Prabang does, but it’s an easy, comfortable base for a night or two before heading further north.
Look for hostels near the Mekong riverside, this is where most of the city’s evening life happens, with food stalls and a laid-back riverside walk that’s especially nice around sunset.
Social hostels with a café or bar on-site tend to be the better pick here since Vientiane’s nightlife is spread out and low key compared to other Southeast Asian capitals, having a built in spot to meet people matters more.
Practical location tip: staying within walking distance of Patuxai (the Victory Monument) and Wat Si Muang keeps most of the city’s main sights reachable on foot, saving on tuk tuk fares.
A quick warning on transport apps: ride hailing works well here but is really only reliable within the capital itself, don’t expect the same coverage once you’re outside Vientiane.
