Nong Khiaw’s skyline alone is worth the trip, but there’s more to do here than stare at the mountains from a hammock.
The 100 Waterfalls Hike is the area’s signature trek, a boat ride upriver followed by a scramble through a series of cascading pools and jungle terrain. It’s not technically difficult but does involve some wading and rope-assisted sections, plan on a full half-day.
Viewpoint hikes, particularly the climb up to the town’s main viewpoint, reward an early, sweaty ascent with one of the best panoramas in northern Laos, limestone karsts stretching out in every direction.
Kayaking or slow boating the Nam Ou River is a relaxed way to see the surrounding villages, and a good half-day option for anyone not up for a full trek.
Village treks into surrounding ethnic minority communities, best arranged through a local guide rather than independently, offer a genuine look at rural life in northern Laos that’s harder to find in the bigger towns.
Timing tip: mornings tend to have clearer skies for the viewpoint hikes, afternoon haze builds up in the valley, especially during the dry season.
