Getting online in Laos is easier than it used to be, but picking the right provider makes a real difference depending on where the trip goes.
Unitel is generally considered the most reliable option for backpackers, with the widest rural coverage, useful if the itinerary includes Nong Khiaw, Phonsavan, or anywhere off the main tourist circuit.
Lao Telecom is Unitel’s main competitor, with solid coverage in cities and a good range of prepaid data packages, worth comparing prices between the two at the airport or in-town shops before deciding.
Where to buy: both providers have counters at the international airports in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, plus shops in every town. Airport SIMs cost slightly more but save the hassle of finding a shop on arrival.
What you’ll need: a passport for registration, this is standard practice across Laos and usually takes just a few minutes.
Data packages are generally very affordable, a data-heavy plan for a couple of weeks typically costs a few dollars, cheap enough that most backpackers just buy the biggest package available rather than rationing data.
Coverage reality check: even with a good SIM, expect dead zones in mountainous areas and while traveling by boat, it’s part of the experience in more remote parts of the country.
