Albania rewards different travelers at different times of year, here’s how to pick the right window for your trip.
May, June and September hit the sweet spot for most backpackers: warm enough for the beaches and hikes, without the full crush of summer crowds or peak-season prices on the coast.
July and August are peak season, hot, busy and noticeably more expensive, especially along the Riviera. This is also when the sea is warmest and beach towns like DhĂ«rmi are at their liveliest, so it’s a fair trade-off if nightlife is the priority.
Spring and early autumn are the windows for hiking around Theth and Valbonë. Mountain trails and passes can still hold snow into May and start closing back up by mid-October, so timing matters more here than on the coast.
Winter goes quiet almost everywhere outside Tirana. Plenty of coastal guesthouses and hostels close entirely between November and March, so this isn’t the season for a Riviera-focused trip, but Tirana itself stays lively year-round.
Our take: late May through June, or September, gives the best balance of good weather, open trails, and reasonable prices almost everywhere in the country.
