Ten days is enough to get a real feel for Laos without rushing every stop. Here’s a route that balances culture, nature and a bit of chaos.
Day 1-2: Vientiane. Ease into the trip in the capital, Pha That Luang, the night market, and a relaxed pace before heading north.
Day 3-5: Luang Prabang. Take the train or the classic overnight bus north. Spend these days on the alms giving ceremony at sunrise, Kuang Si Falls, the night market, and climbing Mount Phousi for sunset.
Day 6-7: Vang Vieng. Head south for a change of pace, hot air balloon rides, tubing on the Nam Song River, and the karst limestone scenery this town is known for.
Day 8: Nong Khiaw (optional swap). If mountains and river views matter more than nightlife, swap Vang Vieng for Nong Khiaw instead, it’s quieter and arguably more scenic.
Day 9-10: Back to Vientiane. Return south for a flight out, or extend toward the 4,000 Islands if there’s more time.
Realistic pacing tip: distances in Laos take longer than they look on a map. Build in buffer time rather than back-to-back travel days, especially around the Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng leg.
Want 7-day and 14-day versions of this route, plus a longer loop through the far south? All three are mapped out in our Laos guide.
