Tirana is the obvious first (or last) stop on almost every Albania itinerary, here’s where to base yourself.
Look for hostels near Skanderbeg Square or Blloku. These are the two centers of gravity in Tirana, one historic and central, the other the nightlife district. Staying near either keeps most sights and bars within easy walking distance.
Social hostels with a common kitchen or bar are worth prioritizing here, since Tirana’s best moments often happen meeting other travelers before heading out to explore the city’s colorful communist-era apartment blocks and rooftop bars together.
A quiet green street can be a nice surprise. A few of Tirana’s better hostels sit on residential streets with small gardens, a peaceful contrast to the busier parts of downtown while still being a short walk from everything.
Booking tip: Tirana rarely sells out the way coastal towns do in summer, but booking a couple of days ahead during peak season still saves the hassle of arriving without a bed.
What to look for: lockers, fast Wi-Fi, and staff who know the bus and furgon schedules well, since Tirana is where most people plan the rest of their route around the country.
