Albania is genuinely one of the safer countries to backpack in the Balkans, and scams are far less common here than in some neighboring countries. Still, a few situations are worth knowing before you go.
Taxi overcharging: some drivers quote inflated prices to tourists, especially near airports and bus stations. Agree on the price before getting in, or use an app to skip the conversation entirely.
Currency confusion at beachside bars: A handful of coastal bars quote prices in euro but calculate change using an unfavorable exchange rate. If a total feels off, ask for it broken down in Lek and count your change before walking away.
Unofficial “guides” at popular sites: At busier spots like Butrint or Berat Castle, people sometimes offer unsolicited tours and expect payment afterward. It’s completely fine to politely decline if you didn’t ask for it.
Scooter and car rental damage disputes: Take photos or a short video of the vehicle before driving off, this protects you from being blamed for existing scratches or damage later.
