Best Time to Visit Laos: A Season-by-Season Breakdown

Laos runs on two seasons, not four, and picking the right one changes the whole trip!

November to February (cool & dry)

It’s the sweet spot most backpackers aim for. Days are warm, nights in the mountains around Luang Prabang and Nong Khiaw can actually get chilly enough for a jacket, and the roads are in good shape. This is peak season, so hostels fill up and prices creep up in the more popular towns.

March to May (hot season)

This period turns up the heat fast, temperatures regularly push past 35°C, and farming in the region often fills the sky with haze, especially in the north. It’s cheaper and quieter, but not the most comfortable stretch for long travel days.

June to October (wet season)

This is when the Mekong comes to life; rivers swell, waterfalls like Kuang Si hit their most dramatic flow, and the countryside turns a deep green. Rain tends to come in short, heavy afternoon bursts rather than all day downpours, so it’s more manageable than it sounds. Roads in remote areas can get rough, and some trekking routes close.

Our take: late November through February is the easiest window for a first trip, especially if the itinerary includes trekking or slow boat travel. If budget matters more than perfect weather, the shoulder months of October and March are a solid compromise.
